CFB Member Spotlight: Jan Behrendt
Anyone who has ever been greeted with the smiling face of Jan Behrendt at one of our 9:30 a.m. classes knows she’s one of our hardest working members, always improving and encouraging those around her.
What has she learned in the 6 years since she joined as a 50-year-old who had never even touched a barbell? Besides the many gains she’s seen in her performance and that of her husband and two daughters in their 20s – who are all competitive CrossFit athletes – it’s the community she enjoys most of all.
When did you start, why and what was your initial feelings?
It’s hard to believe I have been a member at CrossFit Brighton for more than 6 years. I had just turned 50 (yes years!) and I was unsure if this was something I could learn to do. Anything involving a barbell was a challenge, so I decided to give it a month and promised my husband Mark I’d stick it out. Some days were better than others so I figured 2 months may be a better judge of my progress. I’m so incredibly glad I did!
How has CrossFit changed your view on physical fitness?
I’ve learned doing the movement correctly is very important BEFORE adding more weight. Form DOES count so it’s okay to progress at your own level and not try and let other’s progress change your focus.
What have you learned about yourself since you have been at CrossFit Brighton?
I’ve learned that I CAN learn new things at this age and how truly far I’ve come and yet I’m still learning and enjoying the process!
What have you enjoyed most about CrossFit?
I really enjoy helping the new people and making them feel welcome so hopefully they enjoy CrossFit as much as I do now!
I suppose it has to be our “Birthday Pull Ups,” which is a fun tradition when I can count reps and encourage others. But on my birthday there always seems to be A LOT of pull ups in the WOD before I have to do my 50+ so I’m sure I hold the record for the most pull ups on a birthday!
What has inspired the biggest impact on you during your time here?
Encouraging others and receiving encouragement is very powerful and motivating no matter what level you are!
